Do you remember how I went on and on back in December about the bread at Crepe & Brioche? And how I tracked down the phone number and grilled a poor baker about when they were opening a store front (see update in SF Gate)? Well I have yet to visit the store BUT their baked breads, cakes, tarts, brioche (der), scones, croissants, muffins, epis baguettes (pictured, best. bread. ever.) and other items of bakery goodness are available at the farmer's market in San Mateo, also at other markets. It was all I could do to keep myself from jumping over the table and grabbing as much as I could carry and saying "merci" to the French guy that counts in French (show off) and run off maniacally laughing into the hills of the Peninsula to live a happy life on chocolate croissants and walnut bread. Alas, I bought a baguette and a blueberry scone and left peacefully. Check it out.

This bread is beautiful! Any ideas on how it was formed? How big is it? I'd love to be able to recreate this at home.

I've had some pretty good epis baguettes from Bay Bread on Polk, if you're into trying more versions. Every once in a while I've run into them being served at restaurants, though specific places are eluding me at the moment... I think it happened at nearby and related Chez Nous - can't remember for sure though. That loaf looks yummy though!

Bay bread - i *think* they bake for chez nous and le petit robert. both those places certainly serve the epis.
Acme also make a good epis.
And Crepe & Brioche have been supplying restaurants for years, including my good friend Oliver's places like Cafe Bastille and Plouf. But I first fell in love with the C & B bread at Flytrap. Oh Flytrap, oh the C & B bread, oh the limestone lettuce salad, oh sigh. swoon.. how long til lunch???

Jennifer - I think they make them like a regular baguette and then they take scissors or a knife and make the cuts and then cook them that way. They are great for entertaining too, each person gets their own little leaf.
Hey Sam, I have never been to Flytrap, I guess it's good? I'll have to check it out, especially if they have that bread.

Its a funny old fashioned place. Old school. Classic. I love their limestone lettuce salad.
we used to live 2 blocks away so we would go there a lot. I am thinking I am going to go back again soon, even though we have moved. I have to have one of those salads. it's so simple but so good. Some nights they have a guy playing piano which is kind of romantic.
